Detecting Atmospheric Regimes Using Cross-Validated Clustering

چکیده
Low-frequency variability in geopotential height records of the Northern Hemisphere is a topic of significance in atmospheric science, having profound implications for climate modeling and prediction. A debate has existed in the atmospheric science literature as to whether or not “regimes” or clusters exist in geopotential heights, and if so, how many such clusters. This paper tells the “detective story” of how cross-validated mixture model clustering, a methodology originahy described at the 1996 KDD conference (Smyth, 1996), h as recently provided clear and objective evidence that three clusters exist in the Northern Hemisphere, where each of the detected clusters has a direct physical interpretation. Cross-validated mix^-^ture modeling has thus answered an iiiip0i;tAK.i upcu scientific question.

Model selection for probabilistic clustering using cross-validated likelihood
Cross-validated likelihood is investigated as a tool for automatically determining the appropriate number of components (given the data) in finite mixture modeling, particularly in the context of model-based probabilistic clustering. The conceptual framework for the cross-validation approach to model selection is straightforward in the sense that models are judged directly on their estimated ou...
متن کاملThe Effects of Thermal Stratification on Clustering Properties of Canopy Turbulence
The intermittent structure of turbulence within the canopy sublayer (CSL) is sensitive to the presence of foliage and to the atmospheric stability regime. Howmuch of this intermittency originates from amplitude variability or clustering properties remains a vexing research problem for CSL flows. Using a five-level set of measurements collected within a dense hardwood canopy, the clustering prop...
متن کاملSystematic Metastable Atmospheric Regime Identification in an AGCM
In this study the authors apply a recently developed clustering method for the systematic identification of metastable atmospheric regimes in high-dimensional datasets generated by atmospheric models. The novelty of this approach is that it decomposes the phase space in, possibly, overlapping clusters and simultaneously estimates the most likely switching sequence among the clusters. The parame...
متن کاملCluster analysis of cloud regimes and characteristic dynamics of midlatitude synoptic systems in observations and a model
[1] Global climate models typically do not correctly simulate cloudiness associated with midlatitude synoptic systems because coarse grid spacing prevents them from resolving dynamics occurring at smaller scales and there exist no adequate parameterizations for the effects of these subgrid-scale dynamics. Comparison of modeled and observed cloud properties averaged over similar regimes (e.g., c...
متن کاملDependence and Regimes in Applied Spatial
Recent results have shown that the presence of geographical dependency among regions in a cross section has serious consequences for the reliability of traditional tests for structural (in)stability. In the present paper, it is illustrated how the Chow-test for switching regimes is affected by geographical dependency. Consequently, asymptotic variances of the Chow-test, which implement geograph...
